Local woman, Joanne Wilcox, has entered the Great Midlands Fun Run in aid of raising funds for Huntington’s Disease Association in memory of her father Ron and brother Paul who sadly passed away aged just 51 and 45 years old from the disease.

Huntington's disease is rare, but it's a terminal illness for those who have it. It involves the gradual breakdown of nerve cells, causing the person to lose control of their muscles, speech, and cognition.

Jo joined SE Fitness in September through their Couch-to-5k group with two friends. SE Fitness is a friendly ‘RunTogether’ group offering regular walking and running sessions in Sutton Park.

About the Great Midlands Fun Run

Sunday, 14 September, 2003, marked the inaugural Great Midlands Fun Run with the 17th event scheduled for Sunday, 2 June 2019.

The Great Midlands Fun Run is NOT A RACE. It’s a fun event for people of all ages and abilities. Disability or age is not a barrier.

As an entrant you are encouraged to contribute towards the key objective – to provide financial support to charities and voluntary organisations, preferably across the Midlands – by collecting sponsorship money for a charity, voluntary organisation or community interest group of your choice.

Last year £263,150 was distributed to 228 charities and voluntary organisations with a further £252,150 being distributed from the 2018 event taking the total since 2003 to £3.35million.

The Fun Run is staged over an 8.5-mile all-tarmac route. The start is in Royal Sutton Coldfield town centre from where, after 2.25 miles you enter Sutton Park at Boldmere Gate. After running approximately 4.5 miles on park roads including 'Cardiac Hill', exit at Four Oaks Gate after 6.75 miles before returning to the finish in the town centre.
