Wirten by Helen Curtis

Scott and Helen’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed, as in April they were invited to the Built In Quality Awards Dinner at the ICC in Birmingham

Walking down Station Road in Knowle, it is difficult to spot the quaint brick alleyway in between the shops. A ram’s skull discreetly above the arch and a small black sign to the side are the only clues that hidden a few feet away is a beautiful Skandinavian Bar & Coffee House. It is hard to believe that barely two years ago this unique space, known then as The Octagon was a brick, windowless storeroom with little outside space, unused and forgotten about by Bonhams Auctioneers.

Scott Martin and his mum Helen were looking for a challenge and found The Octagon in November 2014. They had a vision, from the time Scott spent living and working in Norway’s top bars and restaurants and it was a perfect fit for their idea of Scandinavian design and a London City feel.

Every inch of space has been utilised to the max! The walls have been opened up and what was the loading bay has been transformed into a working area, storage and toilet facilities. The outside space is now a beautiful split level, heated seating area. They have even stayed in keeping with nature and built around the historically listed tree to create the raised decked area. They were hands on throughout the project and Scott's engineering background enabled them to create the complete vision they had for Oktogon. It was with his awareness and determination that Scott realised the mezzanine could be cantilevered, creating even more open space. The bar now looks like something straight out of a swanky London side street and is exactly how they envisaged.

Scott and Helen’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed, as in April they were invited to the Built In Quality Awards Dinner at the ICC in Birmingham where they were presented with an award for ‘Best Change of Use of an Existing Building or Conversion’, beating thousands of entries. In September they won a further award in this category and have now been invited to the LABC Building Excellence Awards in London, where Oktogon, representing the West Midlands, has been entered into the National Awards being held on 28th November 2016.

Oktogon offers a wide variety of specialist craft lagers, bespoke gins, wine and champagne, as well as coffees and cakes during the day. With the festive season upon us, the ski hut in the outside area will be selling mulled beer and wine and for New Year’s Eve there will be a fabulous Gatsby inspired party.
