Birmingham’s brightest and most innovative entrepreneurs will be celebrated at a special reception being held in the city.

The invitation-only event, on Tuesday 24 January at Zen Metro in the heart of the city’s business quarter, will celebrate Birmingham being named the “Most Enterprising Place in Britain” in the 2016 Enterprising Britain Awards.

The event is sponsored by Crowe Clark Whitehill, the national audit, tax and advisory firm.

Birmingham City Council’s Business Support Package emerged victorious in the “Improving the Business Environment” category.

Birmingham City Council brought together and worked with the six West Midlands Local Enterprise Partnerships to create the conditions to improve entrepreneurial confidence, encourage investment, and attract and retain entrepreneurs to create new job opportunities.

The overall strategy is aligned to the West Midlands Combined Authority and Midlands Engine for Growth.

It has supported 1,000 businesses, generating £87 million in private sector investment and creating or safeguarding 4,300 jobs, as part of the ambitious plans to build a Midlands Engine for Growth.

Companies to benefit from the project include Westfield Sports Cars which accelerated production of a new prototype vehicle and Induction Technology Group which invested in new manufacturing equipment, leading to an increase in global sales.

Small Business Minister Margot James, MP for Stourbridge, said: “We have 900,000 more small businesses than in 2010 and they have an important role to play in building an economy that works for all.

“It’s great to see the support available for business owners making a real difference and driving entrepreneurial spirit across the UK.

“These awards recognise the value of local support and show what can be achieved when people who know their community best make their own decisions. Congratulations to all four winners.”

Run by Investment in Young People (IiYP), on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Enterprising Britain awards celebrate local initiatives which boost business and growth.

Birmingham City Council will now go forward as one of the UK entries to the European Enterprise Promotion Awards.

Guests at the Enterprising Birmingham reception on 24 January will be welcomed by Cllr John Clancy, Leader of Birmingham City Council, and Johnathan Dudley, Midlands managing partner of Crowe Clark Whitehill.

Cllr Clancy said: “Birmingham City Council is pledged to help promote enterprise and business growth in the city and the wider West Midlands. This award proves that our Business Support Package is the best in the UK and can only help to encourage both start-ups and businesses to choose Birmingham as their base.

“The faith HSBC and HS2 have shown in our city is being replicated at the lower levels of the economy and this is a tremendous vote of confidence in the city.”

The event will also hear from Waheed Nazir, Strategic Director of Economy at Birmingham City Council who will be speaking about the Business Growth Programme.

Johnathan Dudley of Crowe Clark Whitehill said: “There has never been a better time to plan for growth and the grants and help available through Birmingham City Council and the region’s LEPs can provide just the boost that the emerging business needs.

“The skill is in identifying what grants are available in which sectors and where geographically, and at Crowe Clark Whitehill we work with our clients to help them plan and implement their growth strategies.

“We are proud to be part of Birmingham City Council’s celebrations and delighted to lend our support.”
