Take a look at our latest food review at the Macdonald Burlington’s onsite restaurant, The Scottish Steak Club at The Macdonald, located in Birmingham.

A Review by Richard Cornfield

The Macdonald Burlington Hotel, located in Birmingham has recently launched it’s onsite restaurant, The Scottish Steak Club, and here at the Cornfield Magazine we had the opportunity to try out a selection of scrumptious and flavorful dishes from the menu, which is open to both hotel residents and visitors alike.

The Scottish Steak club is ultimately known for serving only the finest quality produce and Scottish cuisine, all served within a contemporary setting. It is also clear to see how the restaurant focuses on providing raw ingredients, which are sourced directly from local suppliers.

On being seated within this modern and stylish restaurant, we were presented with our menus and were truly spoil for choice with the extensive options, which included an ever-growing variety of organic food and drink.

We opted for a trio of artisan stone baked breads, which were served alongside caramelised garlic, balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil, perfect as a lite bite to start off our evening of exquisite dining. When choosing the starters we decided to select three very different dishes, which consisted of the skewered tiger prawns, with avocado and mango salsa to compliment, and a spicy wasabi mayonnaise.

As a second choice we went for the John Ross Jnr Smoked Fish Platter, with slices of oak smoked salmon, smooth potted mackerel pate and hot kiln roasted Scottish salmon with pickled cucumber, citrus crème fraiche and toasted sour dough. If you are seafood fan then you need look no further. This platter to share, should certainly be on the top of the list at The Macdonald Burlington.

As a third choice from the starters selection we opted for the smoked baby back ribs, featuring a tasty hickory smoked barbeque sauce and coleslaw, which can also be enjoyed as a main, served alongside a portion of skinny chips.

Already the starters had gone down extremely well. It was now time to select our mains, which included a sirloin steak, thickly cut from the centre of the loin, at 220g, and in which was topped with a red wine jus sauce, which complimented the succulent and juicy sirloin. Plus the dish also included a grilled beef tomato and flat cap mushroom with hand cut chips.

It only seemed right to choose another steak dish from the renowned restaurant so we went with the fillet steak and a flavorsome Strathdon blue cheese sauce, which was again cut from the centre of the fillet, at 200g, and served with the grilled beef tomato, flat cap mushroom and hand cut chips, all cooked to perfection.

To also try something a little different we opted for one of the restaurants classic dishes, the free range corn fed chicken Kiev, coated in crumbs, whilst being filled with a melted and tasty garlic butter, the Scottish Steakhouse ketchup, hand cut chips and a chargrilled 1/2 corn on the cob. This can only be described as a classic dish served with a contemporary twist.

After feeling quite full, however, I must say in a positive way, we thought it would be obscene to ignore the mouthwatering variety of desserts on offer, so decided on the dark chocolate brownie, served with salted caramel cremeux, morello cherries and Arran Dairies vanilla ice cream. All I can say is wow, absolute chocolate indulgence. This dessert was truly divine.

The second choice was the baked New York Cheesecake, served with a blood orange sorbet and sesame tuile. This is certainly one for those of you with a sweet tooth.

Finally, the last dessert option was the classic tiramisu, an Italian specialty of whipped mascarpone cream with espresso and rum soaked sponge. Again this was a pure tiramisu delight, one of the best I have tasted in a long while.

For an evening of quality food and excellent service then you need look no further when visiting Birmingham. The Scottish Steak Club at The Macdonald Burlington is second to none. This is a must try restaurant for all steak lovers when visiting the City in 2017.
